Issued for the 4th of July holiday in 2002, this card is also known as the "Walt Whitman" because of his quote: "Here is not merely a nation, but a teeming nation of nations." The card was available in 2002 at the same time as the "Toucan" card, so not many of each were produced and now are highly collectable, especially with the Matching Sleeve.
Why is Walt Whitman so important?
Walt Whitman is America's world poet—a latter-day successor to Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare. In Leaves of Grass (1855, 1891-2), he celebrated democracy, nature, love, and friendship. This monumental work chanted praises to the body as well as to the soul, and found beauty and reassurance even in death.
